[CARIBBEAN SEA: Cruise ship caught in Hurricane Michael off Cuba coast]

A luxury cruise turned into a rocky expedition when the Royal Caribbean’s liner Empress of the Seas was caught in Hurricane Michael churning off Cuba on Monday night. The liner was headed for Cuba at the same time that the Category 1 storm was lashing the island with strong gusts and rain. Michael has since strengthened and is forecast to be a Category 3 storm when it makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

[HURRICANE MICHAEL: Hurricane Michael filmed from space]

Hurricane Michael continues to strengthen and is almost a “dangerous” category 4 hurricane, announced the National Hurricane Center late on Tuesday. The latest update came at 22:00 local time, with a note of warning that the storm was a “life-threatening event for the north-eastern part of the Gulf Coast.”



Earlier on Tuesday, Florida Governor Rick Scott warned at a news conference that residents “cannot hide from storm surge”, and urged Floridians to evacuate if asked to. The storm is forecast to make landfall near Panama City, Florida, as a strong Category 3 on Wednesday afternoon. Scott called the storm “monstrous,” adding, “We haven’t seen anything like this in the Panhandle in decades.”

This video was recorded by cameras outside the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday afternoon. It shows views of Hurricane Michael between 15:13 and 16:50 GMT, as shot from an altitude of 255 miles, while the storm “churned over the Gulf of Mexico moving northwest at 12 miles an hour,” according to NASA, who uploaded the footage.
